Insight into incipient reproductive isolation in diverging populations of Brachionus plicatilis rotifer

چکیده

Abstract The emergence of reproductive isolation is key in maintaining within- and between-species diversity one the initial steps speciation. In Iberian Peninsula, diverging populations Brachionus plicatilis rotifer create an ideal system to shed light on mechanisms that give rise isolation. Herein, we quantify degree behavioural two groups B. populations, namely, neighbouring by adaptation local environment absence gene flow due geographic distance. We conduct no-choice assays test mating between these populations. analysis shows signatures ongoing most population crosses, which more pronounced with a higher level adaptive divergence, presumably under high migration rates. Overall, this study suggests associated behaviour resulting

Analysis of Expressed Sequence Tags of the Cyclically Parthenogenetic Rotifer Brachionus plicatilis

BACKGROUND Rotifers are among the most common non-arthropod animals and are the most experimentally tractable members of the basal assemblage of metazoan phyla known as Gnathifera. The monogonont rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is a developing model system for ecotoxicology, aquatic ecology, cryptic speciation, and the evolution of sex, and is an important food source for finfish aquaculture. How...

Mass culture of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and its evaluation as a food for larval anchovies

Growth rates of anchovy larvae, Engraulis mordax, reared for 19 days under constant environmental conditions on a diet of laboratory-cultured organisms, exceeded the growth rates of anchovies fed on a diet of wild plankton. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was found to be a nutritious food source when fed to the larvae in concentrations of 10 to 20/ml and in combination with the dinoflagellate...

Production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (Ploimida: Brachionidae) in a Brazilian coastal lagoon.

Secondary production, density and biomass fluctuations, and some reproductive aspects of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis were studied weekly for two years in a Brazilian coastal lagoon. Food (and secondarily temperature) seemed to be the main factor involved in the summer increments. In the first summer, a mass mortality of fish caused changes in the phytoplankton, which switched from the dom...

Use of a potential probiotic Lactococcus lactis AR21 strain for the enhancement of growth in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (Müller)

The effect of a potential probiotic on the growth performance of a rotifer and its inhibition against Vibrio anguillarum was studied. Probiotic strain AR21 had no significant observable effect on the growth rate of rotifers under optimal culture conditions in three consecutive experiments. In the first and second experiments, the AR21 strain exhibited an inhibitory effect against the V. anguill...

An analysis of species boundaries and biogeographic patterns in a cryptic species complex: the rotifer--Brachionus plicatilis.

Since the advent of molecular phylogenetics, there is increasing evidence that many small aquatic and marine invertebrates--once believed to be single, cosmopolitan species--are in fact cryptic species complexes. Although the application of the biological species concept is central to the identification of species boundaries in these cryptic complexes, tests of reproductive isolation do not fre...
